Portugal reaffirms cooperation with Spain in fighting Basque separatist group

LISBON (Xinhua) -- Portugal Tuesday reaffirmed its close cooperation with Spain in fighting the Basque separatist group ETA after a European Police (Europol) report indicated an ""abnormal increase"" in the group's activities in Portugal.
Portugal's Internal Administration Minister Rui Pereira said his country did monitor ETA's movements in Portugal.Portugal and Spain have decided to create concerted investigation teams to monitor ETA's activities in the two countries.
Europol said in its report released in Brussels that ETA's activities in Portugal include renting vehicles to carry out attacks in Spain.
ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or Basque Homeland and Freedom), listed by the European Union as an armed terrorist group, has killed more than 850 people since the late 1960s in its battle to create an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwestern France.

Portugal Tuesday called for closer international cooperation to effectively fight global crime such as the trafficking of weapons, illicit drugs and people, and money laundering.
""New challenges and threats to internal security are placed in the international sphere and demand a joint answer from our states,"" Pereira said.
At the end of the forum Wednesday, the ministers will issue the Lisbon Declaration, in which they will express their determination to fight global crime, Pereira said.
